BRIEF PROFILE:

Even a cursory glance at the profile and strides of the former Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Odein Ajumogobia, would immediately strike the discerning mind that from the beginning this legal and public icon has his place in the skies. A former Minister of State for petroleum as well as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Rivers State (2003-2007), Ajumogobia has since his admission into the Nigeria Bar in 1979 left distinctive footprints of brilliance and exemplary hard work wherever he stepped. This also holds true of his public service in the River State Government where like he did at the External Affairs ministry, he distinguished himself.

Odein Ajumogobia, SAN was born on 29 June 1956 in Lagos and pitched tent with the University of Lagos for the start of his eventful journey into professional and public excellence. The sterling streak in him soon became evident as he bagged a Second Class Upper Division degree in his LL.B (Hons.) program, in addition to various prizes for the best Result in the Final degree Examination. Other notable prize and distinction young Ajumogobia had in his kitty while still an undergraduate included Best overall performance in Second year and commercial Transactions Examinations, a Federal Government of Nigeria Merit Award for Academic Excellence (1975-76) and a semi-final slot in the Phillip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition in Washington D.C, USA (1978. Buoyed by the confidence, intellectual competence and other stellar traits, Ajumogobia graduated from the Nigerian law School in 1979 before plunging into professional practice. He started out as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Commercial and Industrial Law of his Alma Mater, University of Lagos and was there until 1983. during this period, the young legal Turk simultaneously worked as Associate, Fred Egbe and Company (Barristers and Solicitors), Lagos before fully taking on the challenging brief, for a year, as legal consultant, Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd.

In 1984, Ajumogobia teamed up with other fertile minds to set up Ajumogobia and Okeke (Barristers and Solicitors) where he developed a flourishing practice with over 40 full time lawyers and offices in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja. The firm has acted as legal advisers on several of the largest projects in the energy, power and telecom sectors in Nigeria.

Ajumogobia’s next port of call was the prestigious Harvard Law School, Massachusetts where he enrolled in 1988 for an LL>M Degree. He also bagged the fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London) and has since done extensive legal work in that filed, in addition to serving two terms as a member of the International Court of Arbitration, Paris (2001-2006).

In 2002, he became an honorary member of the international arbitration Courts, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The call of public duty beckoned on the outstanding legal professional in 2003 and he was promptly appointed Attorney-general and Commissioner of Justice, River State. He distinguished himself in that capacity and subsequently caught the eye of the federal government.

Naturally unafraid of challenges and social responsibilities, Ajumogobia answered the higher call as federal Minister of State for Energy (Petroleum) where he had sine 2007 meritoriously discharged his official duties. Since sometimes, the reward for a job well done is more work; Ajumogobia was elevated to the rank of senior minister when he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs to effectuate a smoother relationship between Nigeria and her global neighbors by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Investitured as senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, in 2003, Ajumogobia is also a published veteran, authoring and contributing to learned journals and publications, which include authorship of Chapters on Nigeria in Aircraft Finance (Registration, Security and Enforcement), Enforcement of Foreign Judgment and Legal Limitations on the Extent of Foreign Money Litigation.

As a distinguished legal practitioner, H. Odein Ajumogobia, SAN, has also for over 20 years advised and represented an array of foreign diplomatic missions, multinational corporations and international lending institutions investing or operating in Nigeria. Along with his  team at Ajumogobia & Okeke; (Barristers and Solicitors), Ajumogobia has to his credit numerous successful cases at both federal and state high courts and conducted several landmark appeals in the various Divisions of the court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Nigeria. These are indeed hallmarks of the eagle, the lord of the skies.
